About this show

Now a decade into the apocalypse, sisters Hope and Iris Bennett have grown up inside the walls of one of the few remaining first-world communities. Their home, the Campus Colony, is a satellite settlement with a population of just under ten-thousand, located a hundred miles outside surviving city of Omaha, Nebraska. The sisters' scientist father conducts research over one-thousand miles away in a research facility run by the Civic Republic, an ally of Omaha, but one that does not reveal its location to outsiders. When the sisters receive a message that their father might be in a danger, they defy their own community's rules and enlist their friends Elton and Silas to embark on a cross-country quest to save him. Leaving their sheltered upbringing behind, these teenagers learn how to fight threats both living and dead as they travel through a beautiful but decaying and dangerous world.

It gets a little better after the first episode which consists mostly of characters talking about feelings and walking. And more talking. There's a few scenes in the middle with people conversing, bookmarked by some chatting, and then some exposition, and finally some more talking. There's a flashback or two to show that something bad happened to the world (which I figure you knew going in) but no kidding, the first episode is almost entirely of people talking and looking sad. Get past that first episode which will have you thinking this is some art school study in subdued melancholy, and it almost gets watchable. Almost. This is only connected to TWD in the loosest sense. Yes, there is a shared world with TWD (about a decade after some poor sheriff wakes up in a hospital) but it could have easily been any other zombie universe . There's the stock veneer of normalcy over the horror of a zombie apocalypse. There's a military faction taking over control. There are improvised weapons and armor. There are strained attempts not to mention the word "zombies". Nothing particular original as we've seen these all before. The problem is that after three episodes it doesn't really get any better. Instead of action there's just kids sitting around and talking. Or walking around and talking (ahh, the "walking dead" now makes sense). One particular scene could have been nail-biting except that they literally put it slow motion which managed to rob all tension from the scene. Then it's back to sitting in a room and talking. I get it, characters are sad. Characters have back stories and they are damaged. But at some point I want the characters to do something other than moping around talking.

It doesn't quite start out great but it slowly grows on you and finally after several episodes I'm kind of invested in the characters! I wish we could get more Zombies but I know its been so long and the Zombies must be just about gone... So I guess we need to adjust to a mad max setting which I'm cool with just as long as they stick to action no more talking PLEASE NO MORE!!
