Professor Robert Langdon's friend and mentor, Peter Solomon, director of the Smithsonian, has been kidnapped. At the demand of Peter's mysterious abductor, Mal'Akh, to save his missing friend Langdon must to go on an esoteric journey to find an ancient portal. Peter's daughter Katherine, who also happens to be Langdon's ex, joins him on the quest.

Langdon and Katherine encounter Peter's Freemason friend Bellamy who agrees to help them in their hunt for the capstone. Thinking Peter's ring holds the decryption key for the Bible page, they go to the hospital seek out the help of Nunez hoping he can get that they need from into the evidence room. Katherine laments that she may never be able to reconcile with her father. Mal'akh threatens Langdon to get rid of Katherine, or he will.

Sato confesses to Bellamy that she was Zach's CIA handler. Bellamy tells her the story of a rogue Leviathan Group member who accessed the ancient wisdom 100 years ago and learned how to affect matter with his mind. On their hunt for the capstone, Langdon and Katherine instead find a mysterious, old 16mm film of the man - and the incredible even - that Bellamy spoke of. Peter, still in the Araf, experiences the death of his son, Zach, at his own hands. Nunez finds the body of Trish, who has been murdered by Mal'akh to send a message to Langdon, Don't disobey me again.

After recovering the capstone, Langdon is rescued by Nunez at Wiggington Quarry. Katherine receives what she believes to be a psychic message from her father, giving her proof of life, as well as much needed motivation to fight on. Sato receives more information about the man she believes to be Mal'akh and teams up with Katherine, but her true loyalties remain in question.

When Mal'akh sends a disturbing video of Peter, Langdon has no other choice but to reunite with Katherine and team up with Sato for a bold move. Nunez follows a hunch.

After being captured by Mal'akh, Langdon is finally reunited with his mentor, Peter. Katherine tracks down Mal'akh's lair by watching Peter's hostage tape again and again. In the process of escaping from Mal'akh with Langdon, Peter glimpses something familiar in his captor's eyes and realizes Mal'akh has been Zachary this whole time. He shares the information with a shocked Sato. To avoid being caught, Mal'akh jumps off a cliff to his presumed death. But in truth, he's alive and has been arrested by the CIA.

While in CIA custody, Sato interrogates Mal'akh to find out how he evolved from Zachary Solomon to the monster he is today. In flashback, Zach learns his father won't be coming to his rescue, allowing him to fall under the spell of mystic Samyaza. Later Zach learns Peter and Bellamy are indeed working towards his release, but when his new mentor finds out, he beats him and leaves him for dead. Transformed, he gets plastic surgery and covers his body in tattoos, finally becoming Mal'akh. Meanwhile, as Peter works to free his son, Langdon considers proposing to Katherine. But when she dives into her noetic research as a way to cope, he realizes they're too different to go the distance.

Still reeling after learning that Mal'akh is actually Zachary, Langdon and Katherine rush to warn her mother Isabel. But they're shocked to find out that not only did she already know, she's been his mysterious benefactor all along. When Mal'akh finds out his mother has warned the pair to run away from him, he kills her in cold blood, showing yet again just how far gone he's become. Meanwhile Peter is frustrated when he discovers the Leviathans have been keeping things from him. In an act of self perservation, the group votes to give in to Mal'akh's demands.

Katherine, Langdon and Peter decide the only way to beat Mal'akh is to continue solving the clues so they can release the wisdom to the public. They work on a plan to outsmart the CIA with a newly healed Sato. Mal'akh is also two steps ahead, sending a double in his place to be captured by the CIA. But little does he know, his old mentor Samyaza is hot on his trail.

As Mal'akh's plan enters the final phase, Peter and Langdon wrestle over the sacrifice needed to save Katherine, and Nunez and Sato race to understand the weapon known as Cascade.
