Not the majesty and subtlety in the book... But visionary in its own way. The first half has ground breaking visuals so profound that this director was asked by George Lucas to direct the 2nd Star Wars film. The ending to the Dune movie is deeply disappointing... It was a rush job as the studio took final cut rights, stripping the director of the chance to finish and polish his film.

I applaud this attempt and loved watching it again, but Dune, like The Once and Future King, would be almost impossible to bring to the screen. If Peter Jackson took it on and made a Hobbit like trilogy of it, it would still be only a trailer for what is contained within the book(s). Frank was somehow operating at a completely different level with Dune. There are so many concepts in Dune that are only understood through contemplation and reflection, they cannot be absorbed through mere imagery.

Was this a decent movie (without reading or knowing anything about the books)... sure. 4/5 stars. If you read the books... you would be agast at the outakes and down-right misinterpretations... 2/5 stars in that regards. The key to this review is if the viewer has read the books or is at least familiar with them. If not... as alot apparently are not familiar... you will enjoy the movie. If you are a Dune fan... then Dune 2021 is your movie. It is way more faithful to the book than this old version. Giving it 4 out of 5 from the standpoint of not reading the books. It held up well over the decades.
