About this movie

James McAvoy plays Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson, a scheming, manipulative, misanthropic man who spends his time indulging in drugs, alcohol, sexually abusive relationships, and "the games" – cruel plots and systematic bullying of his coworkers and friends. While working on the murder case of a Japanese student, he starts coming unhinged, slowly losing his grip on reality and suffering from a series of increasingly severe hallucinations as he desperately tries to hold his life together.

Based on the titular book, James MacAvoy gives a gut-wrenching performance. He embodies the "protagonist", a wretched, witty, loathsome detective haunted by his demons and trying to cope by turning his coworkers' lives upside down. Honestly one of my favorite MacAvoy movies, maybe THE favorite. And I've been a fan since his turn as Leto Atreides in the miniseries version of "Children of Dune".

honestly a life changing movie if you can get around the artistic side of it. very well written and acted out. one of my favorite movies by far. very dark and cynical though, so if thats not your thing it might not be for you.
