This isn't a very good movie, while it does a decent job of adapting the novel it actually take away from Kubrick's film, which intentionally left pieces of the story ambiguous (creating a better film).

It's good. Well worth watching but it just didn't capture the beauty and boldness of the original. It begins it's failure with that awful over curved #"2" in the title font. The whole movie is like a big blockbuster apology for the first movie. So disappointing. Like everything that's come after.

I might have watched this 30 years ago. The first film tackled space, its mystery, its potential, its danger in an unrepeatable way. Though this second movie has a logical conclusion from the events of the first, it did not have to end that way. The fact it follow through with big ideas is impressive. This is a very good follow up from the first. Everyone in the film, the set, the acting, cinematography, direction are all top of their game.
