About this movie

Based on a true story, U.S. Customs agent Robert “Bob” Mazur (Bryan Cranston) goes deep undercover to infiltrate Pablo Escobar’s blood-soaked drug trafficking scene plaguing the nation in 1985 by posing as slick, money-laundering businessman Bob Musella. Teamed with impulsive and streetwise fellow agent Emir Abreu (John Leguizamo) and rookie agent posing as his fiancé Kathy Ertz (Diane Kruger), Mazur befriends Escobar’s top lieutenant Roberto Alcaino (Benjamin Bratt). Navigating a vicious criminal network in which the slightest slip-up could cost him his life, Mazur risks it all building a case that leads to indictments of 85 drug lords and the corrupt bankers who cleaned their dirty money, along with the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, one of the largest money-laundering banks in the world.

Let me start by saying that if you're into big drug-related, crime action movies, this is not what you're going to expect. This was a movie where the hype of its primary topic outweighed its quality, thus resulting in the production of a rather bland film, though not a bad one. It's lackluster scenes make it more of a poorly scripted drama than an Action & Adventure film (which is for some reason how Google categorized it), and at the same time failed to grab my attention, or my emotions at any point in the film. They didn't make use of the cast's talent, and the quality of the performances (which were decent) in the film were undermined by poor storytelling and a lack of interesting character details, all of which failed to bring the audience to any level of enthusiasm throughout most of the movie. You can't bring the pieces together if they weren't there to begin with. However, if you are looking for something to watch on a saturday night and have an interest in crime, smuggling drugs, and anything Pablo, than its worth a go.

Not the typical action flick that I was expecting - more of a drama with decent but pretty intense story. But I feel like it's lingering somewhere between action and drama, needing more of one or the other. And they should have taken better advantage of the great cast. Good movie and worth watching.
