About this movie

Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. Based on a true story, the film focuses on the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two-time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks, Best Actor, 1993, Philadelphia; Best Actor, 1994, Forrest Gump), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. The two men are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.

One of the better movies that we will see today. It's not often that you have a story like this be true. Hanks was incredible in the way he was able to sacrifice himself for the rest of his crew. I thought that he was extremely brave to continue to aggravate the armed pirates. In the big picture, this is one of Hanks best films ever. Forest Gump was outstanding but if you ask me, I think Captain Phillips is just as appealing not only because of the story, but also the he handled the the hijacking of the cargo ship.

Let me start by saying I have never been moved to write a review, for fear it will be lost in the sea of reviews, but if this convinces one person to watch the movie then it is worth it. This movie was fantastic, devoid of all the seemingly requisite side plots thrown into the movie. There is no letdown as a character finally achieves their goals, just a great story told incredibly well. Everyone down to the background actors deserves a solid high five.

In my personal February movie festival, I aim to see all the nominated films for Golden Globe and Oscars. Originally, Captain Phillips had not been on my top 10 list of movies to see. But, the nomination it had received made it #11. It is a gem within the crown of fine films out this year. This film not only made it to the top 10, it may have become the star. I am grateful Hollywood has graced us with so many excellent films this year.
