About this movie

When young Lili is forced to give up her beloved dog Hagen because its mixed-breed heritage is deemed “unfit” by The State, she and the dog begin a dangerous journey back towards each other. At the same time, all the unwanted, unloved and so-called “unfit” dogs rise up under a new leader, Hagen, the one-time house-pet who has learned all too well from his “Masters” in his journey through the streets and animal control centers that man is not always dog’s best friend.

At it's heart it's a tale of magical realism that shows the backlash of persistently subjugating those under our control. And it shows the power that one thoughtful, passionate person can have at effecting change. If they have the courage to do it. On another level, it's a fantistically shot art-action movie with rip-rolling scenes of a horde of dogs rampaging through the streets, exacting delicilously satisfying justice. The one downside of the film is that it sags a bit around the midpoint. The first and third acts are very strong. It seems like the script had a bit of trouble driving the leads story forward while she waited for her time to take up her role as the link between the dogs and the humans. That said, the film doesn't suffer to much from that. I still highly recommend it. A worthy showing from a little known director: I look forward to seeing what else he has to offer.

I watched this movie for the first time a few months back and hadn't felt an emotional pull to a movie quite like this one. Hagen is a dog that wanted to be with his beloved owner forever but when your owner is a teenage girl, there's only so much that can be done. This movie follows the misdirection of a dog dragged down by a series or terrible owners in a town where being anything but pure bread means death. "Rise of the planet of the Apes" with dogs.
