About this movie

Eight French Christian monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers in a monastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps though the region. The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse. Should they leave? Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay... come what may. This film is loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996. © 2010 Armada Films, Why Not Productions and France 3 Cinema. Very well done and thought provoking on many levels. Although based on occurrences from the late 1990's, very relevant today in light of the recent tragic acts of violence in Paris and worldwide. Found this movie very moving. Highly recommended.

it's slow paced to capture the life routine in a Catholic monastery, a great contrast to the violence outside the wall. I like the part where the brothers gathered to discuss in a very democratic way. Inner peace from faith is certainly anchor against fear and doubt in the chaotic situation beyond their control. The real terror comes in when we forget our own connection to each other and treat other parties as enemy.
