About this movie

An astonishing fete of contemporary film-making, 'The Man in the Hat' is a beautifully framed odyssey of music, story-telling and silent comedy traversing the breath-taking landscapes of France. 'The Man in the Hat' (Ciarán Hinds) journeys through France in a Fiat 500 accompanied by a framed photograph of an unknown woman. He is pursued by five angry men in a Citroën Dyane. Why are they chasing him? And how can he shake them off? Travelling North on his escape across the mountains, gorges and bridges of France, he hears stories of love and loss, listens to Shubert, Otis Redding and Canteloube, and encounters mysterious strangers including The Damp Man (Stephen Dillane), The Chef (Muna Otaru) and The Biker (Maïwenn); coming face to face with the vivid eccentricities of an old country on an old continent, whilst trying to evade the pursuers who are always, relentlessly, on his tail.

As anyone knows from reading my reviews, I do love a silent film! So, a big thumbs up from me for this largely silent, French-set wordless comedy starring Ciaran Hinds as a bloke on the run from the mob. Gorgeous scenery and some off-the-wall comic vignettes enliven an essentially undemanding film. For more, read my the full review: bit.ly/ManInHat

I welcome unique independent films like this. The dialogue expressed is almost always spoken by women. The rest of the film is silent, with gentle loving music, expressive acting, sympathetic characters, beautiful scenery and no violence - a marvelous change! Like others have expressed, you will be left wondering what it all meant, if there is a meaning intended to the film. I like to think that it is a series of dreams - sequences intermingling in the mind of the Man in the Hat and the others he encounters. Watch it and decide yourself - would you like to see a non-blockbuster sequel of this humble, beautiful film? Will you ever forget the eccentric characters, especially those in the clown car?

Thoroughly enjoyed travelling with the Man in the Hat. Sound and vision combine fluidly to enchant for a while. I wonder what it meant? Maybe I'll watch it again...
