1/13/16
Prime Minister Jesper Berg's main political promise was to turn off all oil and gas production and make the transition to Thorium Energy. After major upheavals in the Middle East this choice has led to a recession, and has also caused an energy crisis in Europe. The EU has started serious protests against Jesper Berg's proposal. The Prime Minister will therefore hold a press conference where everyone expects him to stop the oil cut-off, but Jesper Berg does the opposite. He maintains the promise and claims that Thorium will replace oil. Meanwhile restaurant owner Bente Norum informs her employees that she cannot afford to pay them any longer. They are on the brink of bankruptcy. Hans Martin Djupvik (HM) is Jesper's bodyguard and is responsible for the Prime Minister's security at the press conference. While leaving HM fails to prevent Jesper Berg from being kidnapped by Russians in a helicopter. Russia has been commissioned by the EU to enter Norway and take control of oil production.

Jesper Berg ensures journalist Thomas Eriksen that the Russian presence is in no way an occupation. It's only about an energy policy cooperation. During a medal ceremony on May 17th a young guardsman attempts to shoot Russian ambassador Irina Sidorova. HM saves her at the last second. The Russians see the assassination attempt as a declaration of war and arrest the soldier. The situation escalates and military forces are ready for fight on both sides. HM interrogates the soldier, Stefan Christensen, and understands that he has acted on his own terms. He manages therefore to eventually convince the ambassador that this is an isolated incident and not a declaration of war from the Norwegian military, and terminates a very tense situation. Sidorova is deeply impressed with him. Bente has had to give up the entire business, but on May 17th a Russian company wants to rent the restaurant. The company is very pleased and Bente sees a chance for better times, but on the way home from the restaurant one of the Russian guests is brutally run down and killed by a car.

Thomas Eriksen pushes Jesper Berg, he wants the Prime Minister to give a specific date for when the Russians are leaving. Jesper Berg gives in to the pressure and promises to accommodate this. He asks the Russians for a date, but they refuse to discuss anything with the Prime Minister until they are assured that the Chechen man who ran down the Russian will be extradited. HM, who now receives great confidence from the Russians, is asked to investigate. The young son of the Chechen man, Iljas, seeks out HM and confesses to the murder. HM doesn't believe him, and manages to get Iljas to admit that he took the blame to protect his father. HM informs the Russians about the confession, but they don't believe that it was not a premeditated murder - they are certain it is a political act. HM releases Iljas and promises that everything will work out, but meanwhile Elbek is notified that he will be expelled from the country. When Iljas visits his father in prison he finds him dead in his cell. HM cannot comprehend what has happened and asks his wife Hilde. Hilde is a judge and manages to find out that the government office has rushed this case through. In a newscast that evening Jesper Berg announces when the Russians are leaving.

HM is now working solely as an investigator for PST. He will investigate and prevent crimes committed against Russians in Norway. He and his colleague Ingrid have questioned a 14-year-old boy regarding his anti Russian blog. Just as they are about to drive him home, a car bomb explodes in the PST garage and the young boy is severely injured. An organisation that calls itself Free Norway contacts Thomas Eriksen and takes responsibility for the bomb. They want Thomas Eriksen to write for their advantage or his wife Bente's Russian-friendly restaurant will be their next target. Bente's restaurant has started to do very well and she is happy that they finally are on their feet again. Thomas doesn't think they are serious and decides not to tell Bente about the threat. The Russian departure is only few days away and preparations for them to leave the country takes place at all levels. Jesper Berg makes plans for how to resurrect the party, but when he introduces his plan he discovers that the party wants to throw him as Prime Minister in order to remove itself from the recent events. HM continues to hunt Free Norway. He believes a person named Eivind Birkeland could be one of the leaders. Birkeland is active on Youtube with political posts against the Russians. PST chief Wenche Arnesen does not think the Russians are going to leave willingly, but Jesper Berg will not listen to her warnings. She secretly contacts Birkeland in order to help the resistance. HM has a breakthrough in the investigation and finds out where Iljas and Stefan are, and Wenche informs Birkeland about this. HM still manages to arrest Stefan, but Iljas gets away. Meanwhile, Thomas Eriksen receives tips from Free Norway to go to a major oil and gas facility at Viksund. Thomas understands too late that they intend to blow the plant up. He sees the explosion from a distance. Jesper Berg is about to announce his resignation as Prime Minister and party leader when he is notified that a bomb at the Viksund plant has killed 18 Russians and damaged the main gas line down to Europe. The Russians cannot leave yet and Jesper Berg must remain seated as Prime Minister.

Norway has managed to repair the gas lines after the Viksund bombing, but the EU believes that the political landscape is too uncertain for the Russians to withdraw at this time. They have no guarantee that Norway simply will turn the oil on again after Russia has left. Jesper Berg is very concerned about how things will evolve if the Russians stay. In contrary to his entire ideological position, Berg offers the EU a referendum where the people must guarantee gas deliveries to Europe for ten years. In return the EU guarantees military action in order to force Russia's retreat. Both the party and his wife are in utter disbelief, yet they endorse Jesper's election and stand by his side. HM is frantically working at PST to find out who is behind the Viksund attack. Meanwhile, Wenche increases her participation in the resistance movement, which obviously creates problems for the investigation. The Russians are putting tremendous pressure on HM, but Wenche's secret actions are making it very difficult to solve the case.

HM is terminated from PST after a conflict with Wenche. He receives an offer from the Russians that he declines, but Jesper Berg emerges unexpectedly and requests that HM accepts to work for the Russians after all. The Prime Minister and the Intelligence Service need his eyes and ears behind the closed doors of the Russian headquarters. Thomas suspects that Bente is having an affair with Nikolaj. HM is now working closely with the Russians and has faith that he will be able to rescue the Prime Minister by negotiation, but PST decides to liberate Berg by killing the paramilitaries in a sniper attack. Bente, Petter and Maja are slowly recovering after Thomas' death, trying to get back to everyday life. Bente refuses to accept that the death was anything more than an accident, but eventually it becomes too difficult for her to ignore how plausible it is that he was murdered by the Russians.
