In April 1944 military analysts of the Allied forces examined a series of photographs taken during American reconnaissance flights over Poland. The photos were of the buildings in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz. These pictures are thought to be one of the first pieces of photographic evidence of the existence of Auschwitz. However, these photographs were overlooked until 1977 when a pair of CIA photo-analysts were looking over old case files from World War Two. Farocki documents how visual information is analysed, and how this is influenced by the role of memory and contemporary thought which ultimately lead to the ability to be able to discern, or not to discern, an object from a visual image.
