The Helen Morgan Story
As in the lyrics of the tune from Showboat that she makes famous on Broadway, America's first superstar singer gains fame and fortune but never wins the prize she desires above all else--the heart of the man she loves--in The Helen Morgan Story. Helen Morgan (Ann Blyth--Kismet, Mildred Pierce; Gogi Grant, singing voice) is discovered by Larry Maddux (Academy Award winner Paul Newman--Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, "Empire Falls"), who guides her rise from obscurity to stardom as a nightclub singer and Broadway star. But Maddux's inability to return Morgan's love both fuels the deep longing in her vocals that makes her a star . . . and the alcoholism that eventually destroys her.
