American Animals

Watched this movie a few months back on a flight. Quite unbelievable tale of true events, with the realism enhanced by appearance of the real-life protagonists, interspersed throughout the story

As a story telling device having the real people involved contribute on film while the dramatisation of the events unfolds can feel like Thursday night filler TV, here it works superbly. It's not just that the actors are of a high calibre, particularly Barry Keoghan and Evan Peters, or that the direction is snappy and perfectly paced to keep the tension mounting even if you know what happens going in, but that the writing is uncluttered, leaving room for the actors to act without the need to fill silences with empty words. Keoghan is a master of using his eyes to pull you in, they're rarely steady and always on the move while his whole body feels like it's on the edge of not quite knowing what it's going to do next. Evan Peters is equally excitable and unpredictable, with an easy charm that persuades everyone involved how easy this heist is going to be. Of course, being excitable and unpredictable are probably not the traits you want in individuals who are carrying out a robbery for the first time, unless you want to make a film about how sometime so simple becomes so messed up.
