Never a huge fan of Kirk Douglas' .... until his performance here. His controlled fury and sense of irony during the scene where he informs his subordinate that he will be conducting the execution is sublime. Amongst the best of all war films ...

The story is based in France on the front between France and Germany with French troops in World War I one of the best antiwar movies ever made
